"I run my own business, CreDes Solutions Ltd."

Being made redundant at the start of summer last year was the motivation Becky Platt needed to 'go it alone'.

She hatched a plan, won a small Prince's Trust start-up loan and in two short months CreDes Solutions Ltd started trading.

By Christmas she was already being hailed as one of Surrey's top entrepreneurs.

Becky had gained experience working for several design and advertising agencies in Scotland, London, and Surrey.

By the seventh trading month CreDes Solutions had produced brochures, literature, advertising, direct mail campaigns, exhibitions, events, websites, and promotional merchandise.

"The client base is as diverse as our services, ranging from small local companies to large corporations," said Becky, who has taken on two freelance people to cope with the amount of business.

Last December Becky was nominated for the Surrey Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award sponsored by Shell UK.

She was selected as one of the five finalists for the competition and came second, winning £400 of advertising with the Surrey Mirror Group.

Becky said: "This was a great achievement and gave me recognition for the hard work and effort I have put into the business. It wasn't always easy. The initial months were hard work, getting the contracts in, setting up all the business accounts and managing them, and without the help and support from my family I wouldn't be where I am now."

"It had always been my ambition to have my own agency but I thought it would be in my 30s, not my 20s! Losing my job just gave me the kick to go for it."

"I have had various articles for the local press written on me, the business and its success, and am involved with support organisations as I like to encourage young people to set up in business, and I feel that my story is a good example that it can be done."

"It's a far cry from when I started at the University and missed the first semester through meningitis. It was a real struggle to catch up and the tutors at Luton were a big help."

"The design programmes which I learned at uni I am still using now plus some skills I picked up along the way. I wouldn't be here without them."

"I also met some wonderful people during my course, many of whom I am still in touch with today and who have been very supportive, much like my family - I've commandeered half the living room to run my business from home in Surrey."

Interview took place in 2004.
