Ben Hodson: BA Hons Photography and Video Art

Ben Hodson,

BA Hons Photography and Video Art, 2007

Ben Hodson

“I chose to study at the University of Bedfordshire because I liked the look of the course and its Art and Design facilities – they’re fantastic! There are always computers available when I need them, and the Media hub is great! There are plenty of cameras and video equipment, and the photographic studio, dark rooms and video editing suites are very useful.

“The course has a great vocational emphasis and I always enjoy getting back to the chemical darkroom and getting my hands wet! The staff still operate in the industry and have a wealth of insights to help you make yourself employable, even while you are still at uni.

“I also choose to study at Bedfordshire as I wanted to go somewhere close into London without paying the living costs and the amazing diversity in Luton is a street photographers dream.”

Alongside his studies and personal projects, Ben works as a successful freelance photographer.

He has received commissions from both private and commercial clients for a wide range of photographic services. He primarily works in Luton and the Home Counties, but has worked all over the UK and in Central Europe as well.

“In May 2008, I put together my first solo exhibition at a commercial gallery.  The project Lutopia was the result of months of work and it was an ambitious challenge to undertake while I was studying.  The exhibition had great reviews and it has propelled me into a number of great opportunities, including a commission by London Luton international airport.”

What’s more, in 2007, Arup – the world’s largest design, engineer and consultancy firm commissioned Ben to shoot the commercial portraits of the European board of directors in their London head quarters. Ben has also won, and been short-listed for a number of local and national competitions.

And that’s not all. Also in 2007, Ben reached the final of the Shoot Nations photography competition to depict an image representing ‘what upsets you’. His picture, which portrays loneliness in the elderly, is now on permanent display at the UN building in New York.

“I would recommend this course because it teaches you how to think creatively in today's creative market place.  Techniques, equipment etc can always be learnt, but it is the ideas which set creative professionals apart.  The course is run closely with the Art and Design, and Fine Art programs which ensures a high level of inspiration and peer feedback ,and it is a great environment to work in.

“If you come to Uni and don't really apply yourself, you wont get much back for your time.  However, if you come here and motivate yourself to work hard, you will reap loads of benefits and come away with a great experience. Who knows maybe a good grade or two as well.”

Interview took place in 2008.
