"I am a Junior VT Director for ITV."
Giving up drama school pushed Dharam Barrett in a different direction – behind the cameras.
Two years after leaving the University of Luton, Dharam is now a junior Video Tape Director for ITV’s ‘This Morning’ show.
She said: “I had to give up drama school because of funding problems and I chose to do a Media Performance degree as it seemed to be the next best thing. When I started the course, I didn’t realise I’d end up developing an enthusiasm for the production side of the media.”
Dharam, from Bruton in Somerset, said that the University taught her important lessons that are helping her within the workplace now, such as sticking to and meeting deadlines.
“Within any industry and particularly one as difficult to succeed in as the media, being one step ahead of everyone else is important,” she said. “There’s always someone willing to take your place so you need to prioritise your life – social life, work and ambition.
“Looking back, the studio-based classes, using the cameras and the lighting equipment for example, were definitely the most useful. Even simple things like knowing about the health and safety regulations are extra plus points on your CV when you apply for jobs.
“Also, the University of Luton lecturers are all very experienced in the industry and I worked hard and they worked hard for me in return.”
After leaving Luton, Dharam spent 18 months working as a trainee television researcher at Anglia Television in Norwich.
Now at ITV, Dharam is responsible for organising on-location shoots and looks after her own team of production staff. “Throughout my time at Luton and since I’ve started working, I’ve gained invaluable skills. I can operate cameras, sound equipment and edit suites, as well as research and direct.”
“Employers won’t just employ a graduate because they have a degree,” advised Dharam. “There’s too much competition nowadays. You need to have the right skills for the right job.
“I’d definitely advise anyone who dreams of working within television to take a Media Production course as it arms you with technical knowledge. You can always take modules in presenting as an addition, if that’s what you want to do. Also, work placements are so important – start applying now because they won’t come to you!”
Interview took place in 2004.
