"I now run my own business."

At 30, Matthew Trevett has his own marketing, design and multimedia business.

He originally came to Luton after applying through Clearing and, after seven years of working for other people, he’s delighted to be in business for himself.

“I started in Luton in 1991 and completed an HND in Business Administration. Then in 1993 I started a top-up course to do a BA (Hons) in Business Administration.

“The HND was excellent. The modules throughout the course were relevant and diverse. The structure was great because it meant that we had to go into the real world and use our taught knowledge instead of sitting in a classroom being talked at. One module involved writing a marketing plan for a company in Milton Keynes, and then going in to present it to them.”

When Matthew left Luton, he moved around in various marketing-related jobs before getting itchy feet and deciding to visit friends in Australia for three months. He was having such a great time, the three months turned into a year.

On return to his home in Cardiff, Matthew held a series of jobs in areas such as marketing recruitment and direct marketing. In June 2002, he decided to set up on his own.

His agency, TPR Consultants, is a multimedia, design and PR company, and Matthew has found the various contacts he has made extremely valuable in helping him build his own business.

“In my first year out on my own, I’ve exceeded my predicted turnover. In fact, I’ve trebled what we forecast.”

Matthew looks back on his student days with pleasure: “The social side of my time at University was excellent. I had so much fun and made some fantastic friends who I still keep in touch with.”
