I trained as a staff nurse in Edinburgh and following my successful qualification as a RGN, I was employed as a Theatre and Recovery Room Nurse during which time I honed my scrub skills in preparation for training as a Midwife.
I completed my Midwifery training in 1996 and moved immediately to Germany with my husband, during which time my eldest son was born in Mönchengladbach and I commenced work as a Community Midwifery Sister working amongst the British military families in the West of Rhine region.
On my return to the UK I spent some time working in general nursing settings before accepting a substantive appointment as a Staff Nurse in the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) in Cheltenham.
A return to Edinburgh saw my acceptance of a Community Midwifery Sister post which enabled me to hold my own case load whilst maintaining the ability to deliver intrapartum care to Service Users within the local Maternity Unit Delivery Suite. At this time, I completed the Supervisor of Midwives training course and would wish to pursue this role in the future.
In 2004 I accepted a post as a Midwifery Practice Education Facilitator (PEF) and assisted in developing and implementing a new Midwifery Mentor update program for Avon, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.
During this time my interest in the areas of patient safety, risk management and governance issues started to grow and in 2005 I was appointed as a Clinical Governance and Safety Midwife for Gloucestershire Hospitals.
This interest in patient safety issues led me to accept the post of Midwifery Clinical Risk Manager following a family relocation to London and it was in this job that my risk management and governance experience was further developed and enhanced allowing me to accept an opportunity to become Trust Risk Manager of a London Primary Care Trust where I worked prior to my appointment as a Senior Lecturer of Midwifery at the University of Bedfordshire.
In January 2011, I was appointed as a Fellow of the Improvement Faculty, NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and hope to continue my work in engaging Midwifery and other multi-disciplinary healthcare students in the process of patient safety.
I am particularly interested in teaching healthcare students about patient safety, risk management and governance issues as this is an area of healthcare that has grown exponentially over the last decade and continues to develop and progress due to a new found national focus and investment.
Because of my previous work as both a Trust Risk Manager and Maternity Clinical Risk Manager, I am interested in the role of the Expert Witness in medical negligence cases and have trained with Bond Solon on several of their expert witness programmes.
I believe that all student and qualified Midwives should be aware of the potential for medical negligence claims to occur in today’s NHS and I have a strong desire to assist with educating practitioners on this process.
I am extremely interested in all areas relating to patient safety, risk management, governance and medical negligence issues within a Maternity related context and hope to investigate these areas further in the near future.
I also have a particular interest in the changing dynamics of the NHS in relation to the increasing size, ethnicity and cultural diversity of the UK’s population and the potential impact on service quality.
This is an area where I feel further investigation is required and look forward to undertaking this work at a future date.
