Steve Bates

Senior Lecturer in Mental Health 

steve-bates130I have been in nursing since 1982 and have been involved in education since 1989, initially as a clinical tutor and then as Registered Nurse Tutor.

I took a degree in Psychology (Lancaster) prior to entering nursing and have since completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Adult Education and a Masters Degree in Education (Southbank).

I have completed other courses including a nationally recognised course in training trainers to train others in Moving and Handling.

For several years I worked in a Clinical Skills Laboratory as a major part of my teaching role and enjoy maintaining both my own clinical skills and the teaching of those skills to others. I joined the University in the summer of 2005.

  • Cheadle Royal Hospital  Registered Mental Nurse 1985
  • South Bank Polytechnic Post Graduate Diploma in Adult Education 1992
  • South Bank University M.A. Adult Education 1995

Teaching Role

  • All aspects of Mental Health nursing, with particular interest in mental health law, disability and mental health, recovery focussed care, and crisis resolution.
  • Generic issues related to nursing such as study skills, clinical nursing skills, and psychology related to nursing
