Teacher Training

Teacher Training

The University has a long tradition in providing opportunities for those with aspirations to teach. Teacher training has been based at our Bedford Campus since the late Nineteenth Century.

Routes into teaching

We offer a number of routes into teaching, all offering Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

For those seeking to undertake an undergraduate degree and gain QTS at the same time, you can train to be a primary teacher through the B ED - see Primary Education or a Secondary Physical Education teacher - see Physical Education and Sports Studies

For those with a degree (or equivalent), we offer a wide range of postgraduate qualification (PGCE with QTS), while gaining masters credits. This includes a PGCE Primary programme with opportunities to specialise - see Primary Education

Secondary

For those seeking to become secondary teachers we provide a wide range of PGCE with QTS specialist subjects across the 11 - 16 and 14 - 19 curriculum - see Secondary and Post-Compulsory Education

In addition, we offer a PGCE with QTS in Key Stage 2/3 (7-14 age range) with a specialism in one 'core subject' (English, mathematics or science) - see Secondary and Post-Compulsory Education for details.

Mathematics and Chemistry

For those seeking to train to teach secondary mathematics or chemistry but who may have insufficient subject knowledge, we offer a six month subject enhancement course prior to undertaking a PGCE in Maths or Science (Chemistry) - see Secondary and Post-Compulsory Education for details.

Graduate Training Programme (Primary and Secondary Education)

Some candidates may wish to consider an employment based route by undertaking a Graduate Training Programme (GTP) and gain QTS.

You will be employed by a University of Bedfordshire partner school and experience training delivered by staff at the University and school -  see employment based routes into teaching in both the Primary and Secondary/Post Compulsory Departments.

Post-16 sector

For those wishing to teach in the post 16 sector, we offer the opportunity to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PCE) with QTLS (Qualification to Teach in Lifelong Learning).

This is offered at our Bedford Campus as well as at nine local FE Partner colleges - see Secondary and Post-Compulsory Education

You may decide you wish to undertake a degree and then consider the PGCE and Employment Based routes. Within the Faculty of Education, Sport and Tourism, we offer a range of relevant first degrees which can be a stepping stone to teaching.

See Physical Education and Sport Studies, Sport and Exercise Science and Education Studies. In addition, you may wish to consider a range of undergraduate degrees across the other three faculties at the University of Bedfordshire before applying to a teacher training course.

Finally, if you need advice and guidance to help you to succeed in your aspirations to train to teach, please do not hesitate to contact us.
