Courses

We run a range of courses where you can develop your talents as a professional writer and communicator. We offer specialisms in sport journalism, public relations, creative writing and if you dream is to become an actor or  TV and radio presenter, we have a specialist media performance degree where you will learn all the techniques needed for appearing in front of a live audience or cameras.

Our courses are designed to bring out your full creative potential and provide a dynamic environment in which tomorrow's presenters, filmmakers, producers, directors, actors, journalists, authors and scriptwriters work alongside each other.

Facilities

There is a wide variety of state-of-the-art facilities available to students on our journalism and media and writing degrees.

You will benefit from our £5.5m Media Arts Centre, which houses a broadcast television studio, performance theatre and performance studio, digital radio studios, ten digital video editing suites, electronic newsrooms, a white space studio, multimedia suites, and creative writing labs, with additional studios for online and design work.

We also offer a Media Hub where students can borrow the latest digital equipment, including cameras, MP3 recorders, location lighting and audio equipment.

All the equipment can be borrowed overnight or over the weekend, which comes in really handy when you have practical assignments to do.

Teaching excellence

The Guardian 2007 league table placed Bedfordshire 3rd in the country for media-related courses, and the 2008 National student survey placed Bedfordshire in the top 6 in the country for student satisfaction.

Activities

We have a full range of extra-curricular activities you can be involved in including presenting on  the University radio station, running  B:Fest - the Bedfordshire Arts Festival, participating in theatrical performances, performing your creative writing at open mic nights, curating or running film festivals, and helping run international conferences.

Research

You will benefit from a first-class research culture within the Research Institute for Media Art and Design which has world-class research in journalism.

In 2008 the institute  hosted the international conference 'End of Journalism?'. The conference was open to all students and featured over 50 presenters from the UK, USA, Canada, Europe, and Asia.

Links with industry

We have strong links with industry including international companies such as JVC, national organisations such as the BBC and local newspapers and you will benefit from our proximity to London, home to national and international media companies and performance venues.

Visits by professionals

There are opportunities for you to engage with professionals from the industries and we have a full programme of visiting speakers from the creative industries who also contribute to our careers days.

Experienced staff

Many of our lecturers and academic staff have been actively involved in the creative industries for many years prior to joining us. Most have worked, and some continue to work in journalism and broadcasting, film, theatre, and radio and television companies from BBC to Reuters.

Networking

Students can benefit from the expertise and experience of academic staff, and even gain work experience on current projects that our staff are working on, such as BBC's Question Time.

Lecturers will provide you with the latest, and most up to date information, skills and techniques and knowledge (drawn from their own working experiences) that you will need in order to break into this notoriously competitive industry.
