Tim Collings

Course Leader and Lecturer in Journalism

Tim Collings

After more than 35 years in news and sports journalism, in newspapers and agencies, with some radio and television experience thrown in, I joined UoB in 2010. My main focus is the BA (Hons) Sports Journalism course and cultivating mature, reflective thinking, as well as high levels of excellence in practice, in our young media professionals of the future.

My interests have been demonstrated in a career that saw me spend two decades in Formula One, attend every football World Cup finals tournament since 1974 and enjoy wilting in the heat and intensity of the Olympic Games. Top-level sport is a big business that straddles the worlds of politics, culture, media, economics and entertainment and struggles with issues including nationalism, racism, sexism, homophobia and identity.

Media behaviour, including the best and worst excesses of a xenophobic press, lies close to its heart – and requires near-surgical examination on a regular basis. These check-ups are fascinating. The ethical health and practices of our sports-writing media pack are my chosen thesis subject in my work for a Professional Doctorate in Journalism, Media, Cinema and Television.
