Profile

Theo Maniski, Field Chair, BA English Language Studies Language and Communication

I teach various modules on the BA ELS programme and MA courses in Intercultural Communication and Applied Linguistics. My areas of interest include the relationship between teaching and learning, sociolinguistics and syntax.

The middle child of three, I was born in 1960 and grew up in London. My hobbies include DIY and martial arts, which seem to give me bruises in equal measure.

I have taught English in the UK and abroad since the early 1980s. I studied Linguistics under Dick Hudson at UCL where I majored in syntax and English phonetics and phonology.

My postgraduate studies in Applied Linguistics allowed me to explore syntax further in an ELT context and I am currently working towards my PhD.

I’m a member of the IELTS research group coordinated by Cyril Weir in the Centre for Research in English Language Learning and Assessment CRELLA.

I live in Luton with my best friend and our three home educated children who continually show me what learning looks like.
