Sylvia Elwes

LL.B., Barrister, FCCA, CTA (Fellow), Senior Lecturer in Law

Sylvia Elwes has been a Senior Lecturer in law at the University of Bedfordshire for a number of years. She is an associate lecturer at the Open University, and has been an examiner for the Chartered Institute of Taxation Her main teaching areas are EU Law, the Law of Personal Property and Revenue Law. She also lectures taxation to groups of accounting students.

She enjoys the technical complexities of Revenue Law, and how the rules can be used to avoid or minimise the tax burden. While the subject is constantly changing, it is an area that concerns most of the population of the UK. Students find that the knowledge gained in the tax modules has importance to real life.

Sylvia graduated from the University of Bristol with a 2:1 law degree and went on to gain three professional qualifications. She is a barrister and Member of Gray’s Inn, as well as being a certified accountant and a member of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants. She is also a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. She gained admittance to the latter Institution by its acceptance of her thesis on “VAT and European Community Law with an emphasis on current developments”.

She has written extensively in professional journals, including Criminal Law Review, the Solicitors Journal and New Law Journal on the law side, and Taxation, Tax Adviser and the Tax Journal on the tax side. She has also written a book “VAT and Europe” published by Monitor Press, and a paper accepted for internal publication by Arthur Anderson on “The Taxation of loan relationships”.

Sylvia has given presentations to firms of solicitors in London and Luton on a variety of legal topics, including “Recent developments in Consumer law”, “Stamp Duty Land Tax” and “Lasting Powers of Attorney under the Mental Capacity Act 2005”.

She has four children, and one grandson, and she lives in the country. She enjoys growing all her own fruit and vegetables, and producing free-range eggs. She likes literature, both classic and contemporary, and would be pleased to recommend you some good reads.
