Nina Gomes and Melanie Rogers: LLB Hons

LLB Hons, 2003

At 26 years of age, Nina Gomes (on right in photo) decided that she was going to go back to study.

She applied to the University, gained a place on an access course and four years later graduated with a first class honours LLB (Hons) degree.

Originally from St Albans, Nina is a single parent with two young children.

During the four years that she worked for her degree, Nina's dedication did not go unnoticed. So much so in fact, that she was nominated for the Machins prize along with fellow student, Melanie Rogers (on left in photo), from Henlow.

The Machins Solicitors prize is a fund of £250 that is awarded to the best finalist of the year.

Mark Pelopida, Head of Company/Commercial Department for Machins Solicitors said: "We are pleased to continue the sponsorship of the prize for best finalist. This year the award went to two outstanding students. The prize is designed to reward the continued level of hard work which has been demonstrated by both Nina and Melanie."

Completing her LLB (Hons) was a great achievement for Nina who readily admits that when she left school, her grades weren't as good as they could have been.

Finding the dedication and finances to study full time was something that was challenging but worthwhile for Nina. Her main areas of interest lie within that of criminal, personal injury and family law.

"I've now started the legal practical course at the College of Law in London. The only problem being that I haven't yet secured a training contract. Once I've completed this one year course, I need to be employed as a trainee for two years before I can become a qualified solicitor," explained Nina.

"Having two children and doing all of the work needed for my degree didn't leave me with much time to search before I started the legal practice course!"

Interview took place in 2003.
