Rob Townsend, Principal Lecturer

Rob Townsend

Rob Townsend lectures mainly in the area of Integrated Marketing and Integrated Marketing Communications. He particularly enjoys teaching Advertising, Copywriting and Public Relations.

He was for several years Director of the International MBA programme and is now Undergraduate Field Chair in Advertising and Marketing Communications at the University.

He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and of the Chartered Institute of Management and has an MBA from Middlesex University.

Professional Activities

His outside professional activity encompasses a Visiting Lectureship at the prestigious Ecole Supérieure de Commerce, Montpellier, France and an Academic Expert appointment at the Socrates Office of the European Commission in Brussels.

He is currently external examiner for Media and Advertising at the University of East London, as well as a regular MBA validation panel member there.

Trained as a translator and interpreter, Rob Townsend has spent much of his professional life in higher education as well as periods in industrial sales and marketing.

He is a marketing communications consultant in the public and not-for profit sector and has also worked for the BBC, advising on TV and Radio foreign language programmes.

He has travelled abroad extensively for the University of Bedfordshire – Europe, The Far East, India, The Gulf States, USA and Canada - in support of its international collaboration and student exchange work.

Research Interests

Rob Townsend’s research interests lie in the areas of post-modern marketing communications and in teaching and learning.

He retains a great enthusiasm for classroom-based teaching and how this can be enhanced through technology and blended learning.

He sees wide reading on the part of the student and an interest in everything that is happening in society at home and abroad as the basis of a good marketing and marketing communications professional.
