MA Medical Education

Allan Sunderland

What course did you study at the University of Bedfordshire?

I studied MA Medical Education.

Why did you choose to study that particular course?

I chose to study this course to help my career progression and to improve my understanding and ability around how we can better support our future students entering the profession.

What areas of study did you enjoy most and why?

I particularly enjoyed Simulation and Pedagogy. The way we learn is important to understand, but there is not one way as we are all different and we bring different experiences.

What did you like most about the way the course was taught?

The lessons were very collaborative and helped us to explore the theory and problem-solve.

Which practical aspects of the course did you enjoy most and why?

Reconstructing our understanding to appreciate modern perspectives of medical education. Reflective behaviour is our constant, therefore, so must our practice. As we build respect for the many theories, we can pick elements of each to adjust our approach to supporting the one, or many.

What did you think of the University facilities?

As a part-time student, we did not explore the facilities outside of Discover and library support. I was recognised as being dyslexic, something not previously seen and the study-hub team were fantastic.

How did this course prepare you for employment?

Achieving my MA was a distant dream, made a reality by people on the Course Team that believed in me and opened doors. As part of the College of Paramedic’s Career Framework (2018), post-graduate education is a necessity to migrate forwards in your career. The Higher Education has allowed and prepared me to support and deliver a better standard of education. The MA has also facilitated my transition from Trust employment into HEI employment.

What skills did you learn as a result of your studies at the University of Bedfordshire?

Beyond the normal that is often associated with Higher Education, I was able to develop and enhance my existing Leadership and Educational knowledge and re-enforce it with theory; reconstructing it to embrace modern perspectives. In addition, my studies supported me to explore and achieve greater awareness and competence in teaching and guiding learners.

What career path have you taken since finishing your course?

I am now employed at the University of Bedfordshire where I have studied and run the Paramedic Science BSc (Hons) Course.

What are you doing now? Who is your employer?

University of Bedfordshire

Did your degree help you on your career path and into your current post?

My degree has most definitely helped me on my chosen career path.

Would you recommend this course to others?

Yes, this is an excellent course and not solely for Medics or Dentists. NMC & AHP professionals can benefit from this Masters Programme.
