The industry-relevance of the provision is maintained through a range of visiting lecturers, guest artists and speakers who contribute and enhance the academic life of the Division.

The learning community of the Division is supported and enhanced through access to a variety of innovative programmes of activity including the professional programme at the University of Bedfordshire Theatre, the Dance and Performance Evening School, the PA&E Junior Research Institute and CARD, the Centre for Applied Research in Dance.

Two Thirds Sky

Within the Division Dance, Performing Arts and Theatre are seen as practical, studio-based disciplines that focus on contemporary performance practice and developing skills, knowledge and understanding of the professional arts that are both relevant and innovative. English offers an ideal balance between traditional and more innovative areas of study, from Shakespeare to African literature, from language acquisition to film adaptation. We offer one of the few English undergraduate courses in the UK that provides a combination of literature, language, and creative writing. All courses within the Division are strongly supported by state-of-the-art facilities, including the professional performance programme at the University of Bedfordshire theatre which provides access to the latest comedy, dance, music, poetry and theatre.

The Division has a vibrant research culture which develops and maintains the excellent quality of teaching in its subject areas. Dance, Performing Arts and Theatre staff regularly produce internationally significant research in choreography, dance and technology, dance science, contemporary dance performance, community dance practice, directing, contemporary playwrights, applied theatre and reflective practice and performance. English staff have a strong research profile and regularly publish books and articles in their respective areas of interest, including the study of modernist poetry, language and gender, children’s literature and American literature and creative writing. This ensures that all teaching across the Division is underpinned by the latest research findings.

Central to the Division is an ethos of team-work and collaboration. We aim to deliver a creative, supportive, professional environment in which to study, research and learn.

Up Close

The curtain has risen for the first ever professional season at the University of Bedfordshire Theatre, one of the largest in the region.

Poets Matthew Sweeney and Jack Mapanje recently came to our campus as part of the professional theatre season. As well as doing their public readings, both poets offered our final year English students an exclusive workshop.

Students take centre stage - The University of Bedfordshire has launched the Performing Arts Student Festival 2010 at our Bedford campus, which kicked off with a new media exhibition run by second year students.
