Theatre

Theatre is a lively and rapidly growing area at the University of Bedfordshire. The subject has been taught in Bedford as part of the BA in Performing Arts and the BA in English and Theatre since 2001. The year 2009 saw the introduction of a new theatre degree: the BA in Theatre and Professional Practice.

Here are some recent comments about the BA in Theatre and Professional Practice from our External Examiner:

  • “An excellent team delivering excellent modules.”
  • “I continue to find the course syllabus established by the teaching team to be relevant and exciting in terms of content and the methods of delivery.”
  • “I was particularly impressed by the feedback and evidence of second marking: the team is evidently doing excellent work in this area. A great deal of attention is paid to teaching and learning methodologies at Bedfordshire and the staff provide an exemplary amount of guidance and support.”
  • “They [the students] are very happy with the provision and their academic journey. The team should be proud of the value the students perceive in the degree programme and in the staff who deliver it.”
Theatre

The teaching of theatre in Bedford focuses on ways in which theatre can make a difference to the lives of spectators and performers, whether in traditional auditoria, experimental studios, community venues or workplaces such as hospitals, prisons, or classrooms. Each year students develop skills in acting, directing, new writing, physical theatre, applied theatre and professional practice. Current staff have expertise as professional practitioners and researchers in the areas of directing, acting, devising, movement training, contemporary British theatre and reflective practice and performance.

The study of theatre at Bedford is complemented by an exciting season of professional work presented as part of the UoB’s Theatre’s professional season. Go to: www.beds.ac.uk/theatre. Visiting companies give workshops to students (for example Graeae in March 2010), and students have the opportunity of getting involved in the running of the theatre through a volunteering scheme. Each academic year students present their work in the theatre or studio theatre as part of an annual festival of public student performances.

Bedford is also ideally placed to access theatre in the wider region, particularly in London, Cambridge and Milton Keynes, and staff organise regular theatre visits to see nationally and internationally acclaimed performances. We also organise theatre workshops on the Bedford campus that are open to students, for example a workshop with Complicite in March 2010.
