I was educated in Birmingham at King Edward VI Grammar School and then spent ten years working professionally as a theatre director, actor and stage manager.
I returned to higher education as a mature student and gained an MA and a PhD from the University of Leeds.
Whilst teaching in higher education I have maintained my work as a practitioner, creating, directing and touring theatre work in Britain and Europe.
I teach across a range of units incorporating theatre and performance theory and practice.
My PhD research compared the dramatic texts of British playwright, Howard Barker, and Nigerian playwright, Wole Soyinka, within the context of Nationalist ideology.
I am currently involved in a long term research project in collaboration with Professor Chris Johns from the Department of Nursing. We are exploring ways in which Reflective Performance Practice can enhance the nursing curriculum, and create innovative performance events for non-traditional audiences.
I run my own theatre company, Famous & Divine, with Mary Steadman (Bath Spa University). We create devised work which explores the hidden, secret, and silenced areas of women’s lives in contemporary society. In our new piece – Fugitive Songs - we are exploring female manifestations of desire and transgression. (www.famousanddivine.org)
