James
Hewison, Senior Lecturer in Dance and Course Leader for Dance and Professional Practice
I began a career in Higher Education after a decade
of work as a professional contemporary dance artist including extensive
international touring with Vtol Dance Company and Volcano Theatre Company,
amongst others.
I continue to engage with professional performance
and practice-led research through ongoing relationships with companies, institutions
and individuals across a range of academic and professional contexts.
Teaching role
My focus is on studio-based and practice-led areas
of contemporary dance and interdisciplinary performance practice including;
dance technique, choreography, performance direction and production.
Research interests
The focus of my research is practice-based enquiry in
dance and interdisciplinary dance-theatre performance. This continues and
extends from my background as a collaborative artist in professional performance.
My recent research has been conducted largely
through contribution to the internationally renowned performance work of Ersatz
Dance (Dir. Helen Bailey), which is based at the University of Bedfordshire.
