Dr Will Coster

Profile

Dr Will Coster

Dr Will Coster, Senior Lecturer in History and Education and Course Leader for Disability Studies

I was educated at the University of York, where I gained a D.Phil in History. There I began research into the history of religion and the family. This provided the basis for work on baptism, childhood, the family and religion in the Tudor and Stuart periods.

Teaching role

My teaching is in the area of Education Studies and English Literature, particularly around attitudes to and ideas about childhood and youth and in the areas of film studies. I also contribute a historical strand to the Disability Studies course.

Research interests

My interests are in the history of war, religion and society in the past. I am currently working on books on the contrasting topics of early modern warfare and the history of children’s’ play.

Recent research outputs

  • With A. Spicer, ed., Sacred Space in Early Modern Europe (Cambridge University Press, 2005)
  • ‘Social Constructions of Childhood’, and ‘Childhood in Crisis?’, chapters for Childhood And Youth Studies, P. Zwozdiak-Myers, ed., Childhood And Youth Studies, (Learning Matters, 2007)
  • ‘The Armada, war and propaganda’ chapter for S. Doran and T. Freeman, eds, The Tudors in Film. Collection of essay to be published 2008.
