Dr Gordon Mellor

Position

Principal Lecturer In Sport Philosophy and History

Gordon Mellor

Profile

As the Head of the Department of Physical Education & Sport Studies, Gordon is leading up the expansion of the department. We have a range of six undergraduate courses, together with two PGCE’s, that span physical education, dance, community sport leadership, sport management, sport studies and football studies. We have a growing Masters provision that encompasses sport in the community, sport development and sport pedagogy. All our courses are under-pinned by a focus on sport, pedagogy, engagement and active lifestyles both in the educational context and the wider community. We have innovative football and sport in the community projects being rolled out both at home and internationally; a strong consultancy base; and a developing reputation for our conflict resolution work.

Gordon is heavily involved in the preparations for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. His current academic focus is investigating the idea and underpinnings of the much vaunted ‘Olympic legacy’ and the manner in which communities can both benefit and contribute to this important aspiration of modern Olympism.
