Dr O’Donovan acts as second supervisor to the following research students:

Research Interests
In broad terms my research interests are focused on physical education and sport pedagogy and hasfour key strands of work:
- The impact of physical education and school sport policy on the pedagogical practices of teachers.
- Models based practice and curricular innovation in schools
- Classroom ecology and young people’s agendas in physical education
- Social justice and equitable practices in physical education
From a methodological point of view I employ a variety of data generation techniques including participant observation, questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, and journal writing.
Research Grants and Consultancy
While working at the Institute of Youth Sport and as a research fellow with Leeds Met I have worked on the evaluation of numerous national programmes designed to engage young people with physical activity and sport.I led an application for the evaluation and research of PB Challenge Parks valued at £38000 which I jointly held with Dr. Tess Kay in 2005. Between 2006 and 2008 I completed the evaluation of the Norwich Union GirlsActive evaluation and research project valued at £12000.
In addition I have worked on the following evaluation projects ‘Girls in Sport’, ‘Zoneparc’, ‘School Sport Partnership Programme’, and the ‘New Opportunities fund for PE and Sport’. I have had the opportunity to work in collaboration with a variety of funding organisations such as Youth Sport Trust, corporate organisations including Nike and Coca Cola and importantly with young people, teachers and schools.

- Member of the British Education Research Association Special Interest Group in Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy steering group.
I compete at an international level in Orienteering and work as a coach with the British World Class Orienteering Talent Squad. I was Team Manager for the British team to the European Youth Orienteering Championships in Serbia in July 2009.
