Principal Lecturer and Academic Director for Primary Education
I qualified as a Primary School Infant Teacher in 1976, with Mathematics as my main subject area, and taught children aged 4-13 years in a range of schools before becoming an advisory teacher for mathematics in the late 1980s.
I have a continuing passion for the teaching and learning of Mathematics at Foundation, KS1 & KS2, and for developing students’ and teachers’ enthusiasm for, and confidence and competence in, the subject.
Throughout my career I have been a member of the Association for the Teaching of Mathematics, was a member of the Association’s Council and involved myself in the organisation of the annual conference.
Within a few years of working in primary teacher education at the University, I had the privilege of becoming part of a research team looking at mentoring of students in primary schools. This led to the publication of a book to disseminate the findings.
My work as an advisory teacher helped prepare me for working in Initial Teacher Education and thoughout my career I have been involved in CPD events.
Currently I am involved in the DELPHE project working with Primary Teachers in Malawi. Over the Easter period of 2011 six members of staff, supported by a team of students, ran CPD sessions over a period of two weeks for English, Mathematics, Science and Physical Education.
