Senior Lecturer in Mathematics and PgCSMT Programme Leader
I joined the University in September 2010. I qualified with a Chemistry degree in 1995, gaining a PGCE shortly afterwards. Having worked in all phases of education over the last 15 years, I have developed a passion for introducing children to the enjoyment of Science and Mathematics education.
I have held a variety of senior management positions in schools including assessment manager, head of year and mathematics co-ordinator. I completed my MA in 2002 centred around Mathematics and Science education and particularly enjoyed exploring the impact of my studies on practice through an action research approach.
I am currently studying for my PhD is this area. I also supervise B.Ed and MA extended studies in areas typically related to the research of mathematics teaching within the primary classroom.
Currently I am course leader for the University’s PgCSMT -

(Post Graduate Certificate for Specialist Mathematics Teaching), after having developed and validated the course in light of the ‘Williams Independent Review of Mathematics Teaching in Early Years Settings and Primary Schools’ (2008).
The NCETM recognised the quality of the course and in September 2010 the University was awarded the NCETM CPD quality mark.
As part of the application process, we had to supply evidence that our courses provide a demonstrable and measurable impact on the quality of mathematics teaching within schools. There are currently only a relatively small number of mathematics CPD providers who are able to carry the mark.
I am also responsible for the Personal Development Planning aspect (PDP) of Year 2 of the Primary B.Ed programme and the use of e-technology to support this process. I also co-ordinate the Year 2 school experience.
