Steve Rodwell

Position

Steve RodwellSenior Lecturer and Year 3 B.Ed Leader

Profile

I joined the primary department at the University of Bedfordshire in 2006. I have taught on the undergraduate, postgraduate and masters level courses. Mostly I teach about primary humanities, science or professional studies. I am particularly interested in environmental education, how it is taught and the subject knowledge and attitudes that student teachers have about this area of learning, as well as the children’s attitudes to learning about the environment and wildlife.

I began working as a primary school teacher in 1995 in Buckinghamshire, mainly teaching in Key Stage 2 and 3. To gain some experience of teaching overseas I taught in Bermuda for three years. Before entering into a career in education I worked as an ornithologist. I was fortunate to spend two and half years on the island of South Georgia, at the British Antarctic Survey base of Bird Island, participating in studies of albatrosses, penguins and seals. I have also worked with the Wetland Trust, the Edward Grey Institute and the RSPB on a range of projects, including migratory bird studies and surveys in both Europe and Africa.

Publications that I have been either author or co-author of, have included moult studies about albatrosses, penguin behaviour and diet studies, monitoring Antarctic Fur Seal entanglement, bird ringing studies and the status of birds in Senegal and other West African nations. I still have a ringing permit and maintain an interest in birding.
