Joanne completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology with Management Studies at the University of Glasgow in 2002. After a short spell working in Finance,
Joanne returned to the University of Glasgow
and gained an M.Sc. in Research Methods for Psychological Science in 2006 and
completed a PhD in Cognitive Psychology in 2009.
The aim of her PhD. was to investigate how readers understand pronominal references and logically equivalent frames. In completing this research Joanne has used a number of different techniques including pencil and paper tasks, eye-tracking and event related potentials.
Joanne’s research interests are mainly in the area of
Psycholinguistics. She is interested in how variability in the context of a
paragraph can make certain phrases more or less acceptable.
For example: If a
character in a story wants their glass of water to be full how does the reader
react when the glass is described as half empty? Joanne’s research also attempts
to highlight the part that pragmatic world knowledge plays in the reading of
sentences.
For example: ‘The man told the taxi driver to hurry up’ is likely to be easier to read than ‘The man told the taxi driver to slow down’ because our pragmatic knowledge tells us that in this situation it is more common for the passenger to be in a hurry.
Joanne’s secondary interest is in the applied use of logically equivalent frames such as 95% fat free vs. 5% fat.
