I am Chartered Health Psychologist with the British
Psychological Society. I have research interests spanning health and
occupational psychology. I am chair of the
Media and Press Committee of the
British Psychological Society and a member of the Publications and
Communications Board. I am also
registered with the Health Professions Council. I am an Honorary Visiting
senior research fellow at the University of Leeds, where I was employed as a
Senior Lecturer until July 2010.
I have degrees in social sciences from the University of Nottingham and Brunel and, after a career in social work, gained a Diploma in Psychology from the City of London Polytechnic (now London Metropolitan University), and an MSc Occupational Psychology and PhD. Psychology from the University of Hertfordshire. My PhD (1993) was on the transmission of occupational stress between marital partners.
I am interested in research into the effects of work on health, psychological wellbeing and health behaviours. In particular I have conducted research using daily measures of stressors and health behaviour in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Leeds(supported by ESRC funding). I am interested in investigating relationships between home and work including work- life conflict and balance. I also conduct research looking at the predictors of health behaviours and interventions to improve such behaviours, e.g. eating and exercise.
I am
currently supervising three PhD. students conducting research in aspects of work
stress and burnout (in India and UK), predicting health behaviours (comparisons
between UK and Malaysia) and interventions to modify health behaviours. Two of
these projects include cross cultural comparisons. I have in the past supervised
fourteen successfully completed doctorates. I am interested in supervising
students in any of my areas of research interest.
