"I am now working on a PhD at Queen’s College, Cambridge."
Two years after leaving the University of Luton, one graduate is working hard to develop her expertise in the field of psychology.
Hannah Lambert, 25, started a BSc (Hons) Psychology at the University of Luton in 1997 and was so inspired by her lecturers, she stayed on and became one of the first cohort of students to study for the Masters in Psychology and Culture.
“I studied part-time for my Masters which allowed me to work alongside many of the University’s excellent Psychology lecturers,” explained Hannah, who is from Powys, in mid-Wales. “I was a Research Assistant during my Masters and I taught first year students. The University gave me a scholarship whereby I didn’t have to pay fees because of the teaching I was doing.
“One lecturer taught me about Cultural Psychology, which is a big part of what I’m focusing on for my PhD. She’s helped so much to build my skills especially when it comes to conducting interviews and analysing the findings.
“My dissertation and Masters have both been based around masculinity, with my Masters focusing on men in the British Armed Forces.”
After leaving Luton in 2002, Hannah embarked upon a six-month round the world trip, visiting Australia, New Zealand and South America.
“I’ve never enjoyed myself more than when I was travelling,” said Hannah. “I had my PhD course sorted out before I went so I had to get back by a certain date – good job really or else I’d have stayed in New Zealand! Travelling helped me appreciate what I was working for at home. I also made some great friends and met my boyfriend!”
Hannah now lives in Cambridge with a friend she met whilst travelling, and is completing her PhD at Queen’s College, Cambridge.
“My PhD is also about masculinity. It’s such a broad topic to look at and I’m focusing on the British Armed Forces as a whole now,” Hannah explained. “I’ve conducted 80 interviews and am carrying out focus groups with both men and women. I’m also looking at the recruitment campaigns used by the Armed Forces. My Masters research is really helping me out too.”
Hannah is also involved in setting up an eating disorders society at Queen’s College, to give her a break from her studies.
“I have to have something to take my mind off the research from time to time, and helping to reintroduce this society which was very popular some years ago, gives me a much needed break from research. It also allows me to use the psychology ideas I have learnt over the past seven years.”
Due to complete her PhD in 2006, Hannah already has a solid idea of what direction she’s going to take once she’s finished her studies.
“I’m going to have some time-out and travel some more,” she said. “There’s so much more I want to see. Then, when I come back, I really want to continue with the teaching side of psychology – I love it! I’d like to gain a lectureship or a fellowship, hopefully at Cambridge, and continue the research.”
Interview took place in 2004.
