Russell Hurn: BA Hons Psychology

Russell Hurn

BA Hons Psychology, 1999

"I am now a Chartered Counselling Psychologist at the Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Trust."

Russell was a mature 31-years-old when he started at Luton in 1996 but discovered he wasn't the oldest student in town.

He said: "I was what I thought was a very mature student at a ripe old age however I soon discovered I was not the oldest and that I was quickly accepted as part of my peer group."

"In the end I rather think my maturity helped me to fully realise my potential at Luton. I was still able to enjoy the experience of student life but also felt very motivated to complete my course successfully because it was something I had spent a long time considering.

"My course, BA (Hons) Psychology was a British Psychological Society (B.P.S) accredited course, which was a definite plus point. I was fortunate enough to gain a place on an exchange programme during my second year and spent six months in Florida."

"I also received an academic award at my graduation, for the best performance in psychology, and a much welcome cheque for my hard work."

"My time at Luton really helped me kick-start my career and helped me to discover the direction that I wanted to take.

"My degree from Luton gave me the foundations required to go on and study for my Masters in Counselling Psychology and then my Post-Graduate Diploma, which I needed to achieve chartered status with the BPS."

Interview took place in 2004.
