The Salters’ Festival of Chemistry has been designed
with the idea of promoting the appreciation of chemistry and related
sciences among young people. The first Salters’ event at the University
was in 1991, and the current Festival format has been running since
2001. See the gallery for the latest photos.
The festival gives schools around Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Middlesex the opportunity to experience chemistry on a fun basis and make use of University facilities.
Participating schools visit the Division for a day for hands-on activities in the science labs, where the students are challenged to use their forensic skills to uncover ‘who dunn’it’ in a murder mystery or multi-million pound robbery.

The students use scientific methods and experiments to work out who committed the crime, using the small amount of evidence they are given.
Another activity is the ‘No Paint Challenge’, where teams have to create different colours of paint, using their knowledge of acid-based chemistry.
At the end of the day, cash prizes are awarded to the
schools with three winners from the morning and three from the
afternoon sessions.
Twelve-year old Nikita, a student at Rickmansworth School had this to say about the festival she attended :
"I’m very interested in Science at school but today’s been really interesting because we’ve been able to use better facilities and equipment than we have at school.
Also, it’s been fun to see what it’s like to work within a University science lab. I think I’d like to be a chemist when I’m older."
In 1918 the Salters’ Company founded the Salters’ Institute of Industrial Chemistry, initially to assist young chemistry students returning from the war to complete their studies.

Today the Salters’ Institute plays a major role in the support of chemistry teaching, the encouragement of young people to pursue careers in the UK chemical industries, and the promotion of chemical education including the whole area of curriculum development.
The Salters’ Chemistry Club encourages schools to set up Chemistry Clubs and then to take part in Salters’ Festivals of Chemistry. During the 10 years of its operation, 10,000 young people from over 800 schools have participated.
Festivals of Chemistry have been hosted to date by more than 45 universities throughout the UK and Ireland in partnership with over 200 chemical and related companies.
