There is a growing need for sport and exercise scientists to
focus on the demands on industry, sport, and the health sector, and to provide
research and solutions that enhance performance and promote exercise and
well-being.
Whilst traditional sport and
exercise science has tended to focus on laboratory based research, Professor
John Brewer has recently joined the department with a wealth of experience in
the provision of applied sport and exercise science support to elite
sport.
This includes experience of
working with many international teams and Premier League Football clubs, as
well as major employers such as the Police and Fire Services, who are seeking
to enhance the fitness and well being of their staff.
Furthermore, external factors such as the
London 2012 Olympic Games, and the threat of obesity to the general population,
mean that there are many opportunities to undertake research with sport and
industry to support the Government targets of increasing participation in sport
and exercise, and improving the health of the nation.
The group has significant experience in these
areas, and is adept at operating in both laboratory and field-based
environments.
Recent advances in technology now mean that a range of robust
physiological measurements can be collected in environments that are specific
to the research activity, providing valid and reliable data that can be used to
enhance understanding and improve performance.
The group also has close links with the UK food and drink industry, and with the UK Anti-Doping programme for sport, and will be investigating the opportunity for further research in these areas.
