Division of Sports Therapy

About the Division

Sports science lab session

Head of Division: Michael Preston-Shoot (Acting)

Degrees in Sports Therapy have been run at the University for nearly a decade, and subjects related to Sport and Exercise Science, e.g. in the Biosciences, for well over 30 years. Teaching of Anatomy and Physiology received ratings of excellent in the last Government assessment by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), and research in Sport was rated as being of National excellence in the last Research Assessment Exercise.

As a result of continuing investment the Division of Sports Therapy has modern, well-equipped sport physiology, biomechanics and sports-therapy laboratories and other facilities, including practice areas.

A practical sports therapy session in progress

Courses Sports Therapy are offered at both undergraduate level, i.e. Foundation and BSc Honours degrees and, depending on the subject, at post graduate level, from MSc (taught and/or research depending on subject), through to MPhil and PhD.

The Postgraduate courses are supported by the research of the Division, with most staff undertaking research or other professional activities, the results of which are regularly presented at National and International conferences.

All undergraduate students also undertake a research project in their third year, and some students may choose to undertake this at collaborating, or nearby, institutions, facilities or companies.

In Sports Therapy members of staff are qualified therapists, coaches, fitness instructors, and/or practising athletes at international, national and local level. Staff therefore have a good understanding of both academic and applied, or professional, aspects of their subjects that helps us offer courses that not only meet the demands and expectations of the students enrolled on them, but also ensures that our graduates are highly employable.

Professional accreditation is an important aspect of this employability. The BSc in Sports Therapy offered by the University of Bedfordshire combines the academic requirements of a degree programme with vocational standards needed to be able to practise on a professional basis.

In the absence of any single nationally accepted governing body, the course includes modules at all levels that are validated for professional indemnity insurance.

This allows students to become eligible to practise on a professional basis during their course, thereby gaining invaluable experience in the field and enhancing their learning towards becoming an accomplished practitioner.

Furthermore, the physiology laboratories in the Department have full accreditation by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES), allowing staff to conduct consultancy activities with a variety of national squads. Thus, in addition to gaining a highly applied academic degree, students' CVs are also developed!

Degree programmes in the Division offer flexible entry routes and, in addition to traditional A-level and other applicants, we also welcome applications from mature, qualified individuals, such as coaches, fitness instructors and those with other HNDs, FdAs, or other qualifications.

Individuals who can demonstrate suitable applied learning or experience, rather than simply academic qualifications are also invited to make enquiries.
