Carly Thomas

Profile

Carly Thomas, Laboratory technician

I gained my undergraduate degree in sports therapy in 2006 at the University of Luton.

I continued in higher education to qualify in electrotherapy and began practising as a sports therapist part time in Jan 2007.

In Feb 2008 I began employment at the University of Bedfordshire as a BASES conference co-coordinator/Laboratory Technician.

Post BASES conference my role became part time as a Laboratory technician, alongside this I have continued practising in my role as a sports therapist.

In May 2008 I gained my NLPQ and began a volunteer life guard/hydrotherapy position at the Pasque and Keech Cottage Hospice.

I thoroughly enjoy my time with the charity and am able to use my knowledge of rehabilitation and apply it to hydrotherapy in a self employed context.

In July 2008 I felt dissociated from the world of study and began studying for a qualification in UKSCA.

Inexperienced as I was in the area of coaching and strength and conditioning I began employment at the Harpenden Lawn Tennis club in September 2008 at the start of their junior program.

I have just completed a 3 month case study as part of my accreditation which I hope to complete at the end of 2009.

I am currently awaiting a 1 year Mres contract in order to start research in the tennis sector using a specific tennis skill set, motion capture and biomechanical angles in order to provide detail in lower and upper body angle segments related to tennis forehand accuracy.

The subject group will be LTA coaches/HPC and IHPC athletes to ensure a competent subject group.

Teaching role

My primary role is supporting and presenting lab and clinic based practical demonstrations and practical assessments.

Research interests

Current research interests are tennis related and the lower body involvement in strength ROM and power contributions to all tennis actions.

Service to the academic/professional community

I have been volunteering at Keech and Pasque Hospice as a lifeguard and improving awareness of hydrotherapy benefits for disabled patients.
