I started out as a registered nurse (RN) specialising in Intensive Care and Cardiothoracics before moving into the Sports Science arena.
I then became an Exercise Physiologist and eventually Lab Director at the National Sports Medicine Institute (NSMI) of the UK (London) for 4 years before moving into teaching full-time.
During my time at the NSMI I worked with elite sports, Olympic athletes and medical research projects as well as other doing consultancy work for the fitness industry, the media, sports teams (West Ham United, Celtic & Liverpool) and the armed forces.
I moved into industry as 1st team fitness coach and sport scientist for West Ham United FC (2001-03), fitness coach for Shenzhen FC (China, 2004) – Super league champions 2004, and consultant sports scientist / fitness coach to Kitchee FC (Hong Kong).
In 2005, I joined the University of Bedfordshire on my return from China & Hong Kong. However, I still maintain my applied work and was called up to train and prepare South China FC (Hong Kong) for the Asian Cup tournament vs Liverpool FC & Portsmouth FC in August 2007.
Outside of work I enjoy cycling, running, rowing, windsurfing, diving, photography and architecture.
My teaching responsibilities draw from a background in health, sport science support and exercise physiology.
I am responsible for co-ordination and delivery of BSc and MSc. modules in 'Applied Physiology of Exercise and Health, Applied Physiology of Sport and Performance, Sports Nutrition, Fitness Testing & Monitoring.'
Other duties include supervision of BSc & MSc student dissertations in sports & exercise physiology related topics.
My current research interests focus on sports performance, training theory, strength & conditioning, fitness testing & monitoring.
My PhD research into obesity involves using MRI technology to measure exercise influences on internal adiposity. This work has been the focus of considerable media interest in the research team’s work at Imperial College London (Hammersmith Hospital).
