Samantha Barry-Wilson

Lecturer in Sports Therapy

Samantha Barry-Wilson

I graduated from this degree in 2006. Since that time I have completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice and passed the viva voce examination for my Masters by Research in March 2010.

I hope to continue my research whilst teaching and have been working towards a PhD by publication since Dec 2011.

Outside of work hours I enjoy netball and octopush (underwater hockey).

Teaching Role

I am co-ordinator/lecturer for Level 3 Rehabilitation of Sports Injuries and I assist in the lecturing of Level 2 Advanced Soft Tissue Techniques.

I teach Level 1 and 2 Research Methods and supervise Level 3 Project students assisting in the areas of Sports Therapy and Sport Science.

Research Interests

My research interests include the adaptations to varied training types, extreme environments and how these might be linked to injury and illness. I am particularly interested in Triathlon disciplines: swimming, cycling and running. I have previously researched the responses to breath-hold training.

I am currently working on my PhD, focusing on Physiological biomarkers for overtraining and potential immune function depression, after intense exercise.

Recent Research Projects

  • Validity of claims for efficacy of the O2 and CO2 ‘tolerance training tables’ and their associated risks.

Recent Conference Presentations

  • Barry-Wilson S, Sheard PW. Implications of different plantar loading strategies in trained and untrained jumpers. International conference for clinical biomechanics, May 2006, Staffordshire.
  • Barry-Wilson S, Sheard PW. Plantar loading strategies during drop jumps on surfaces of differing recoil properties. BASES student conference, Feb 2006, Edinburgh.
