Over the weekend of 18 and 19 of November, the University of Bedfordshire (UK) hosted the first international summit meeting aimed at examining the similarities and differences between sports therapy and related professions as practised in the European Union, the USA and Canada.
Sports Therapy was introduced to
the UK in the early 1990s and although we have
seen an enormous increase in demand over this short period, regulation and
‘benchmarking’ still remains in its infancy.
Whilst some dialogue has begun,
with the aim of achieving state registration through the UK
government regulatory authority, the Health Professions Council (HPC), there
has been limited consultation to define common practice in sports therapy.
This summit was therefore designed to examine other related professions from around the world and to invite open discussion with sports therapists and representative bodies as to their views on the way forward.
