Tarryn Mutch

Lecturer in Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation

Tarryn Mutch

I have been a Biokineticist in South Africa for more than 10 years. I completed my studies at the University of Johannesburg in 2009 with an undergraduate degree in Sport Psychology and an Honours degree in Biokinetics.

Entering into the workforce, I completed my internship at the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology focusing on exercise therapy for those with Diabetes and related chronic conditions. Following this, I migrated to a more orthopaedic based practice for rehabilitation of athletes and general populations.

Moving back to Cape Town, I started my own rehabilitation and therapy-based practice which I ran for 6 years. I was heavily involved with Villager Rugby Club (second oldest rugby club in the country) where I progressed to being head of medical. My buzzing practice brought in primarily orthopaedic based conditions as well as the odd neurological condition – this sparked more of an interest to become involved in neurological exercise rehabilitation and research. During this time, I also worked with 2 sports colleges teaching sports massage therapy. I found myself to be very comfortable in the classroom which encouraged me to pursue lecturing further as a full-time position. Teaching in a practical fashion, encouraging clinical reasoning and lateral thinking is a passion of mine and I look to interact with students in a fun and enjoyable way which encourages this sort of learning process.
