"I now work as CEO of a company offering self-employment training."
Susan currently heads a not-for-profit company called incredit, which offers disadvantaged groups the opportunity to embark on self-employment.
She said: “We work with women, including some who are currently serving prison sentences and some who are ex-offenders, and with young people and people from ethnic minorities. We also work with community groups developing social enterprise opportunities.”
She has found her degree in HR management absolutely invaluable for her role, honing her training delivery skills as well as helping her in her role as line manager for the whole organisation. However, she has also been adding to her skill set with a further MA qualification, this time in Social Enterprise Development.
Susan originally chose Luton because it was geographically convenient, but also found the University offered lots of other advantages. “I loved the Putteridge Bury site where all my lectures were held – there’s such an atmosphere of tranquillity about it. Doing a post-grad course does not have to mean horrible cafeterias and well-worn classrooms!”
When not at work, Susan is not averse to a little California dreaming. She spent a couple of years on America’s West Coast after leaving Luton, and still misses the sunshine. However, she is very glad to be living in Hertfordshire and loves the job she does now.
“I am passionate about the work I do,” she said. “We’re creating confidence and business opportunity for many who had only dreamed of being their own boss but never thought it possible.”
