Q. Why did fees change in 2006?

The UK Parliament decided that from 2006 UK and EU students entering higher education will no longer have to pay university tuition fees while they study. Instead the fees are paid back once the student has graduated and is earning over £15,000.

Q. How much is the University of Bedfordshire charging in 2011?

Like most universities, Bedfordshire will charge £3,375 for honours degrees and  £3,375 for foundation degrees.

Q. How much financial support will I receive from the University of Bedfordshire in 2011?

You could receive up to £6,755 of financial support from the University of Bedfordshire, depending on your circumstances. This is in the form of bursaries and scholarships.

Q. So, when do I pay the fees?

Once you have made an application through www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance, you will be notified as to whether you are eligible to receive a tuition fee loan. If you are eligible, the tuition fees will be paid by the Student Loan Company, directly to the University on your behalf.

You will only have to start paying your fees back once you have graduated or left university and are earning a salary of £15,000 or more. If you choose to live and work abroad after graduating, the repayment threshold may vary.

Q. Will I have to pay interest?

Interest will be charged at the rate of inflation, so you will not pay back more, in real terms than you borrowed.

Q. How much will the repayments be?

Your loan repayments will be nine per cent of anything you earn over £15,000. So, if you are earning the average graduate starting salary of £18,000, your repayments will be nine percent of £3,000, which works out as roughly £5.19 per week.

Q. Will I end up with this debt for the rest of my life?

No!  As you start earning more your repayments will increase, helping to pay off the fees and, after 25 years the debt is cleared regardless of how much you have paid back. It is expected that most people will have cleared their debts after 13 years.

Q. So, what financial support do I get while I am at the University?

There is a lot of financial support available to you both from the Government and the University. See the funding pages for further information about what support is available to you.

Q. Can I work part-time to earn some extra cash while I’m studying?

The University of Bedfordshire has a dedicated Job Shop at the Luton campus designed to help you find the right part-time job to fit around your studies. On average, students can expect a part-time job to involve 20 hours per week, at approximately £6 per hour. There are many opportunities for part-time work in and around Luton and Bedford, in areas such as retail and entertainment, or within the University or Students' Union.

Q. What about students coming to study at the University of Bedfordshire from abroad?

Students coming to study an undergraduate degree from other EU countries will pay the same as home students here in the UK. Students from outside the EU pay the University’s international fee.

Q. If I decide to study part-time what difference will that make?

If you decide to study part-time or at postgraduate level you will need to pay the course fees up front. These fees vary depending on the course being studied.
