Fees 2012 FAQ

Fees 2012 FAQ

Changes to tuition fees from the academic year 2012

Q1 Why are tuition fees increasing from the Academic Year 2012?

The Government has decided to change the way that universities are funded for teaching, replacing the Government Grant with funding from student fees. Through a system of graduate loan repayments, graduates will be expected to contribute up to the full cost of their courses.

Q2 When do I start repaying the loans for my degree?

There are no upfront costs. Students may apply to the Student Loans Company for a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of tuition. You will start repaying the loan after you have completed your studies and are earning more than £21,000.

Q3 I normally live in Wales - will these changes apply to me?

Students who normally live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland will receive financial support from the Scottish Government, the Welsh Assembly Government or the Northern Ireland Executive - as appropriate.

Q4 I am an EU student studying in England – will this apply to me?

EU students from outside the UK that meet certain eligibility criteria will have access to a loan to cover the cost of their tuition fees. They will generally not be eligible for support for their living costs.

Q5 I intend to study for my degree on a part time basis; will these changes apply to me?

Yes, but it depends on how intensive your part-time course is compared to full-time study.  You will have access to a loan to cover the cost of your tuition if your course of study qualifies for a minimum of 25% of the intensity of a full-time course.

For example, if full-time mode for your course is  20 hrs tuition per week, to qualify for a loan part-time mode needs to be at least 5 hrs tuition per week.

Q6 When do part-time students start loan repayments?

When you have graduated and are earnings over £21,000 per year the repayments on your loan will start.
