Professor Les Ebdon on the Today Programme
Professor Les Ebdon, vice chancellor of the University of
Bedfordshire; and Professor Malcolm Grant, president and provost of UCL
and chair of the Russell Group, discuss whether financial constraints
are stopping students from going to university.
Cost is a major concern for most potential students, but if you are going into higher education, there is a wide selection of funding available to you from the Government, your place of study or other sources.
Here at the University of Bedfordshire, we try to make financing your studies as simple and affordable as possible, by offering generous bursaries, excellent scholarships and lots of support.
It’s important to know what funding is
available to you, what you are eligible for and whether or not you will be
required to pay it back once you have completed your studies.

As a general rule, grants and bursaries do not have to be paid back, but loans do, so it is important to check what you are applying for, so that you know what you will owe when you leave higher education.
The financial help and support that
you will be eligible for during your time at university will depend on your
course, where you live while you are studying, and your individual circumstances. You could also be eligible for financial
support if you have children or adult dependants, or if you have a disability
or specific learning difficulties.
And, with news of interest rates plummeting, students are potentially in a great position, as the Student Loans are set to be at their lowest level since they were introduced in 1990. So, now has never been a better time to study at university.
