Funding FAQ

Nursing, Midwifery and Operating Department Practice

1. What funding is available for Nursing, Midwifery and Operating Department Practice students?

All UK and EU students on these courses will get their fees paid by the NHS.

Plus, as a student on a Nursing, Midwifery or ODP course, you could be eligible for the NHS maintenance bursary – these bursaries are administered by the NHS Student Bursaries.

2. Why can’t Nursing and ODP diploma students get student loans?

As a diploma student you will receive a non-means-tested bursary from your Local
Education Authority, which means that you are not entitled to a student loan.

3. Does everyone on these courses get funding?

All UK and EU students will get their fees paid by the NHS if they complete the forms
sent to them by the NHS Student Bursaries. However, not everyone receives a
maintenance bursary. The reasons for students not receiving a bursary may include:

  • Residency status – complicated residency requirements must be met in order to qualify for the maintenance bursary. These requirements are summarised in the booklet Financial Help for Healthcare Students which is available from NHS Student Bursaries website www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/students
  • Channel Islands and the Isle of Man – applicants from these locations are not eligible for the bursary. Crown dependency residents are eligible for offers in the basis of local education authority agreement on fees
  • Means-testing – your financial circumstances may mean that you do not qualify for a maintenance bursary.
4. Can seconded students get bursaries?

As a secondee, your employer will pay for you to attend the course, which means you are not eligible for bursaries. All you need to do in order to be paid by your employer is to complete the NHS Student Bursaries financial form.

5. How do I apply for the bursary?

If you accept an offer of a place on a Nursing, Midwifery and ODP course, the
Admissions team will notify the NHS Student Bursaries by sending a BUR99 form.
This form will prompt the NHS Student Bursaries to contact you regarding a
questionnaire you need to download and other related information.

All you have to do is to complete the questionnaire and return it to NHS Student Bursaries – this will enable them to process any bursary that is due. It’s that simple! Then the NHS Student Bursaries will write to you and inform you how much non-repayable financial support you are due to receive if you qualify.

6. NHS Student Bursaries say that no BUR99 has been received for me – why not?

Don’t worry! If you’ve accepted your offer, then you just need to call the Admissions
team on 01582 743500 to check if and when a BUR99 was sent for you. NHS Student
Bursaries deal with a very high volume of BUR99 forms and sometimes may not be
able to find a specific one. If this is the case, the Admissions team will be able to send a duplicate to the NHS Student Bursaries team.

7. Can I discuss the details of my bursary with the University of Bedfordshire?

As the financial information relating to an applicant’s bursary is confidential, you can
only discuss your bursary assessment process (for example, the result of your
means-testing) with the NHS Student Bursaries team. If you have any questions,
you can call them directly on 0845 3586655.

8. My financial position has changed since I applied for my bursary – does this matter?

If you’re financial position has changed after you’ve been assessed for your bursary, you simply need to get in touch with the NHS Student Bursaries so they can reassess your payment, and ensure that you receive the full bursary you are eligible for.

9. When do I see the money?

Once you’ve applied for a University of Bedfordshire course, we will inform the NHS Student Bursaries team. You receive the bursary once you have registered on your course. All the monthly amounts will be paid directly into your bank account following
registration.

Diploma students will receive the same amount throughout their study period and only need to complete new forms if their circumstances change.

If you are a student on a degree, you will be sent a new application from the NHS Student Bursaries before the beginning of each academic year for re-assessment.
