Funding overview - Nursing, Midwifery and Operating Department Practice

Degree students*

  • are paid £2,810 during term time if living in own home and £2,346 if living with parents; degree students get paid £82 or £54 for each additional week over 30 weeks
  • can claim dependants’ allowance of £2,640 for a first child or dependant and £539 for each subsequent child
  • can claim childcare allowance for children under 15 which covers 85% of their childcare costs up to £126.65 per week for the first child and £187.85 for two or more children (income-assessed), and must be to a registered childcare provider
  • can claim Working Tax Credit (for lone parents or couples who work more than 16 hours per week); degree students can only claim either the Working Tax Credit or the NHS childcare allowance
  • can claim Parents’ Learning Allowance of £1,303 (income-assessed) per academic year if they have a dependant child
  • are exempt from council tax and, if eligible, can claim housing benefit and social security benefits
  • can claim Child Tax Credits
  • can also apply to the NHS Business Services Authority Patient Services for free prescriptions, dental treatment, sight tests, glasses and contact lenses and travel to and from hospital for NHS treatments
  • can claim travel costs to and from placements, as long as these exceed travel to and from University including parking; the cost of travel is 23p per mile or cost of public transport.

Diploma students (including ODP)*

  • cannot access student loans
  • can access the Access to Learning Funds
  • are paid £6,701 per year (not income-assessed)
  • can claim dependants’ allowance of £2,238 for a first child or dependant and £539 for each subsequent child
  • can claim childcare allowance for children under 15 which covers 85% of their childcare costs up to £126.65 per week for the first child and £187.85 for two or more children (income-assessed), and must be to a registered childcare provider
  • can claim Parents’ Learning Allowance of £1,104 (income-assessed) per academic year if they have a dependant child
  • receive an initial payment of £55 at the start of their course
  • can claim travel costs to and from placements, as long as these exceed travel to and from University, including parking; the cost of travel is 23p per mile or cost of public transport
  • are exempt from council tax and, if eligible, can claim housing benefit and social security benefits
  • can claim Child Tax Credits
