Studying Full-time

Studying postgraduate courses full-time

Students in the IT centre

Full-time taught courses usually take one full academic year to complete. However, research-based courses can take longer. For example, it would take more than three years to complete a PhD.

International students tend to favour the full-time mode of study, as there are restrictions on the number of hours they can work whilst studying, and there could be complications in obtaining a visa for part-time study.

Full-time study also seems to be a particularly popular choice for students who have just completed an undergraduate degree, and also those who are changing career and therefore wish to retrain in as fast a time as possible.

Advantages of studying full-time

There are many benefits to studying a postgraduate course full-time:

  • Enables you to focus entirely on the course
  • Allows you to take full advantage of university life and the social life
  • You can gain a qualification in as short a time as possible

Disadvantages of studying full-time

Although there are many positives to studying a postgraduate course full-time, there are also some drawbacks:

  • May have to live on a limited income
  • Could be difficult to study at the same time as having work or family commitments
  • Course fees and living expenses can add to debts you may already have
