Studying by Distance Learning

Studying postgraduate courses by distance learning

Woman at computer

Distance learning is where lecturers and students communicate online rather than face-to-face. The University will agree a timescale of study with you and will also agree deadlines for submitting coursework.

You can also keep in regular contact with your personal tutor for support via email or the telephone.

However, even though you will have lots of support from the university staff, those choosing to study by distance learning will need to be able to work independently and be:

  • Self motivated - You will not be based on campus and so you will need to be a self starter to keep on target with your coursework
  • Dedicated - You will need discipline as the course can sometimes last twice as long as a full-time course. It can also be a challenge to undertake hours of study after a day at work
  • Organised - You will need to have good time management skills and be able to multi-task in order to ensure that you can balance your studies with your other commitments

Advantages of distance learning

There are many advantages to studying by distance learning:

  • Flexible study so you can work at your own pace
  • You can fit your studies in and around your work and other commitments
  • Courses are focused on you and your needs
  • Develop your career without having to leave your current employment
  • Access to our many online resources during your studies

Disadvantages of distance learning

Although there are many benefits to studying by distance learning, there are also some drawbacks:

  • Your course of interest may not be available to study by distance learning
  • With distance learning, you may have to wait until the lecturer has reviewed your work and responded to it - so it may not always be instant
  • Students in distance learning courses do not get to interact to a great extent with professors and other students
