Taught Courses

Taught courses

Taught courses are usually facilitated through classrooms, seminars, tutorials or lab-based work, and tend to be assessed by coursework or examinations.

The University of Bedfordshire offers a selection of taught awards, such as:

  • Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert)
  • Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip)
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
  • Master of Arts (MA)
  • Master of Science (MSc)
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Master's degrees

The traditional Master's degree is a taught course of one year’s full-time study (or two years if studied part-time) which leads to the award of an MA or MSc degree. A Master's degree is worth 180 credits, whereas a Postgraduate Diploma and a Postgraduate Certificate are worth 120 and 60 credits respectively.

The MA is a Master of Arts degree and is normally awarded for a course in an arts subject – for example an MA in Media Arts or an MA Intercultural Communication.

The MSc is a Master of Science degree and is usually awarded for a course in a science or technology discipline – for example an MSc in Applied Computing and Information Technology or an MSc in Biotechnology.

Some universities, including the University of Bedfordshire, also use other Master's degree titles to show the specialist area of study rather than just using MA or MSc. The best known is probably the MBA, or Master of Business Administration, which is for those specialising in a course in business, management and administration. A PGCE course is an intial teacher training courses which focuses on developing teaching skills for the subject you intend to teach.

Differences between the taught courses

A taught Master's course involves a period of study (lectures, seminars, and submitting coursework for assessment), followed by a period of supervised research from which a dissertation is produced.

Master's degrees usually follow this pattern; but postgraduate diplomas and postgraduate certificates usually omit the research and dissertation stage.

The Postgraduate Certificate, and Diploma courses, take under one year to complete and are usually studied by those who are continuing professional development (CPD).

However, the Certificates and Diplomas may also be awarded if students on a Master's course do not complete the final dissertation.
