Frequently asked questions

Is it a good idea for my child to study locally?

With the rising cost of higher education, staying close to home makes financial sense. However, the social aspects are a key part of the student experience. So if your child decides to live at home whilst studying, don't expect them to keep regular hours.

You should also encourage them to participate in evening or weekend activities so that they don't miss out on making their first student friendships.

You could also consider the option - study locally and live in.

Some universities, the University of Bedfordshire included, allow students to apply for university accommodation, which allows them to gain the social benefits of living at a nearby university, whilst saving money travelling to and from home.

How many hours per week will my son or daughter be at University?

Study hours range from 15 to 35 hours per week, depending on the course your son or daughter chooses. Contact Recruitment and Admissions for specific information about your son or daughters chosen degree.

How much are the tuition fees?

Although universities can vary the amount they charge in fees, nearly all (including the University of Bedfordshire) will be charging full-time UK/EU students, £3,145 per year for undergraduate honours degrees.

For full-time UK/EU students studying towards a foundation degree at the University, £1,255 will be charged in fees.

How much do part-time students pay?

UK/EU students are charged a proportion of the full-time fee, according to how much they are studying. For example, a student taking half the study that a full-time student takes would be charged half of the full-time fee.

How do I pay the fees for my son or daughter?

Your son or daughter will need to make an application through your Local Education Authority to the Student Loans Company (SLC) for the loan. Tuition fees are then paid as a loan, by the Student Loan Company, directly to the University on your behalf. If you are paying for your son or daughter's tuition fees, your son or daughter will need to specify the method of payment when registering at the University.

What financial support is available to my son or daughter ?

If your son or daughter is from the UK you can apply for a student loan, a fees loan and a variety of grants. The University of Bedfordshire also offers a wide variety of bursaries and scholarships of up to £4,180 to help support students. Visit the funding section to find out more. If your son or daughter is from the EU they may be able to apply for our scholarships and bursaries.

If my child gets into financial difficulties – is there anyone he/she can turn to?

We have a dedicated team of student advisers who can help with financial advice and guidance.

What is UCAS?

UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) is a central organisation that processes applications on behalf of universities and colleges. Students can apply for a course at the University of Bedfordshire through UCAS. For more information about UCAS, visit  www.ucas.com

Can I be told how well my son or daughter is doing at university?

Under the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998 we are unable to discuss any specific or personal details relating to your son/daughter's application, course or university experience.

Are University open days important?

Printed prospectuses and websites can tell a lot about a university, but if you want to get a real feel for the place you simply have to go there. That’s why we hold lots of open days through out the year.

You and your son or daughter can visit our campuses, meet our staff and students, see our facilities, check out the local area, and find out more about the degree courses on offer.

Can we attend a university open day with our son or daughter?

As you will probably be helping out financially, it is only natural that you want to ensure that you will be getting value for money. Things to look out for include: availability, cost and location of halls of residence, computer facilities, libraries, workshop facilities and studio space.
