Jim Gannon, the students’ tutor at Barnfield College, said: “I wanted the students to get an impression of university life. Unless they experience it first-hand they will never know what it is like. I have seen many students change their mind about going to university after experiencing a day like today. I was impressed by the University’s business pods. They really are the new way of teaching and the students love them.”
Saul Roberts, curriculum leader for Business and ICT at All Saints Academy, said:
“We wanted students to experience university so that it would open their eyes to what it is all about. I hope today showed them that it’s not as daunting as some might expect and that it’s an option for them all. Going to university is definitely a step in the right direction and teaches skills which are desirable in today’s workplace.”
Nicky
Kemp, Head of Sixth Form was pleased with the visit. This is her fourth
trip to the University with the school and she was delighted how well
the day went.
She said: “On each visit the University really looks
after us. It feels like the day’s programme is bespoke for our School
and our students finish the day saying they feel very positive about
what university life can offer them.”
The day was judged to be a success by all involved, particularly by Luton Sixth Form tutor Andrew Britton saying: “I think today gave them a very real experience, I think it opened their eyes to it more and they feel more prepared.” His opinion was echoed by colleague Patricia Larkham: “I think the introductory talk where they were speaking about their UCAS application was very helpful to get them started on that. Overall it was a good day.”
Community Liaison Co-ordinator Joanne Bowes said: “The University advisors gave useful, impartial advice to the students and it was good for them to speak to someone from higher education to get a realistic insight into studying at university.”
