Employment

Part-time Work

Most international students on courses of more than six months are allowed to seek part-time work for up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full time (up to 37 hours per week) in vacations.

Full-time Work
  • Placements, internships, work experience. You cannot take time away from the University to work unless that work is a required/part of a compulsory sandwich course (do not rely on advice from anyone except an immigration adviser on this).
  • University Vacations. You are allowed to work full-time (up to 37 hours per week).
  • Immediately after completion of studies. While you are awaiting results/degree ceremony you can work for a very short time. All Taught Masters and PhD students will be permitted to work full-time for up to 2 years following successful completion of course.

Unless you are registered on a sandwich course, you will not be able to take time off from your studies in order to work. You can check if yours is a sandwich course by speaking to staff in the relevant academic department.

  • DO NOT come to the UK depending on paid employment.
  • Potential earnings cannot be included as a proof or source of financial support.
  • Non-EEA Students on courses of 6 months or less who would like to work part-time MUST tell the Immigration Officer that they would like to have a restriction, not a prohibition, on employment - be granted Leave on Code 2.
If the officer does not agree, seek help from the Student Centre to apply to have prohibition on work lifted.

At all times, the information given to Entry Clearance Officers/Immigration Officers must be complete, accurate and true. Records are kept of all communications and correspondences. Any misunderstanding or discrepancy can lead to original or subsequent visa applications being rejected.
