Immigration information for students currently outside the United Kingdom

Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS)

From 1st November 2007 non-EU/EEA students coming to the UK for some Taught Masters programmes and some research degrees (MPhil, PhD etc) will require ATAS clearance BEFORE applying for a student visa.

The areas affected will generally be science and will be identified by JACS codes. To find out if you will require ATAS clearance check the list below to see if the JACS code for your course is included.

ATAS may also apply if you are changing the area of your research to one of those listed below.  If ATAS applies to you, it is VERY IMPORTANT that you apply for this clearance before you make your application for entry clearance.

Research degrees - PhD, MPhil etc: Subjects allied to Biological Sciences

JACS codes beginning with:

  • C1 – Biology
  • C9 – Others in Biological Sciences
Subjects allied to Computer Sciences

JACS codes beginning with:

  • G4 – Computer Science
  • G7 – Artificial Intelligence
  • G9 – Others in Computing Sciences
