Guidelines for writing your personal statement

Frequently asked questions

Can I ask for help for writing my personal statement?
No, the statement must be your own work. We would like to know about your personal experiences and interests as these are what will help us decide whether you are suited for entry on to your chosen course.

What information should I include in my personal statement?
Please include the following:

  • The reasons you want to study the course you have chosen
  • Your leisure time activities and personal interests
  • Information about any part-time or full-time jobs you have held and what you have learned from any work experience you have undertaken
  • Explanations of any gaps in your education or employment history

If you are applying for an MBA, please provide a full account of your post-graduation work experience, making sure to include full information about your managerial experience (eg managing people, budgets or projects).

We would kindly ask you not to include general information already stated elsewhere on the application form.

Where does it state that the personal statement must be my own work?
The declaration which you agree to on completion of your application states that you have confirmed that the information you have provided is complete, accurate and all your own work.

The University of Bedfordshire does not and will not accept applications where the personal statement has been written by anyone other than the applicant or has been copied from a website or any other source.
